The Iranian legal medicine organization (LMO)
Following the issuance of the National 20 Year Perspective by the Supreme Leader of the Revolution, the 20 Year Perspective of LMO was developed and its goals were defined in the framework of 5 year development plans. In line with the Judicial Development Plan the 20 Year Perspective of LMO was revised in 2009 through studying, training and teamwork by a group of directors and experts of LMO.

LMO is an independent organization working under the auspices of the Head of the Judiciary; and provides expert opinions in the field of forensic medicine and medical expertise.

The Iranian legal medicine organization, is an independent, with the mandate of finding the truth and helping in establishment of justice in the society, prevention of social harms and occurrence of crimes in the society, provides expert opinions in the field of forensic medicine, based on scientific, legal and juridical principles, using professional and competent personnel and modern technologies, with due diligence, speed and accuracy. To this end, it benefits from its comprehensive collaboration with internal and external academic and scientific centers in the field of research and education.

This deputy is in charge of planning for, direction of, and supervision over its divisions’ activities which include:
- Specialized medical commissions
- Clinical forensic examinations

- Autopsy and crime scene investigation (CSI)

This deputy is in charge of educational and research activities of LMO which include:
Developing various curriculums for training courses in forensic medical examination, autopsy and laboratory investigations, etc., for employees and experts in different divisions of the organization;
Providing in-service training courses for employees;
CME (continuous medical education) programs for physicians;
Planning and providing educational programs for residents of forensic medicine, occupational medicine, and psychiatry as well as medical students, students of obstetrics, nursing, law and police academy;
Planning and policy making for research affairs;
Evaluation of research proposals submitted by its employees and physicians, as well as university lecturers, residents of various medical specialties, legists, and religious experts, who want to use the LMO’s data in their research projects ( the results of which are published in the scientific and research magazine of LMO );
Holding workshops, seminars, and scientific congresses in the field of forensic medicine;

- General directorate of the chief of LMO
This directorate has 5 subsidiary offices including:
- Iranian Genetic Data Bank
This is a country-wide ongoing project for receiving and gathering human samples for genetic profiling in order to provide such services as identification, verification and matching in cases requested by competent authorities.
- Public relations and international affairs
This division is in charge of providing information regarding LMO to the public and receiving their expectations from the organization as well as initiating and developing national and international relations.
This office is in charge of developing the organization’s plans and policies in cases of crisis (natural and man-made disasters) as well as coordination and supervision over execution of the planned measures.
- Performance evaluation and complaints handling
The duty of this office is to evaluate the performance of different units, as well as directors of the organization to detect positive and negative points in their work. It is also in charge of handling the complaints of the clients of the organization.
Annually, a significant number of our compatriots need organ and tissue transplants in the course of treatment of the diseases, and LMO, because of its professional situation, is in a position to help these people. In order to facilitate and support provision of transplantable tissues and help in alleviating the patients’ suffering, LMO launched the project of Tissue Bank in 2017. According to its mandate, tissue bank provides tissues that are available through informed consent of relatives of deceased donors or will become available by the legal will of living persons who wish to donate their organs or tissues post mortem.
